What is PCOS?

PCOS is short for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and it affects millions of women globally. PCOS is a hormone disorder of the endocrine system. Elevated levels of insulin (insulin resistance) and androgens (excess male hormones) can occur coupled with a slower metabolism, and irregular or no menstrual cycles. Other symptoms include acne, excess body and facial hair, rapid weight gain, and mood disorders.

PCOS is also the most common cause of female infertility.

You can also be diagnosed with a thyroid disorder when you have PCOS. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism first, then PCOS followed soon after. Having both can be very challenging, and the best advice I can give you is to be your own advocate and research everything you can. Test things out and keep testing everything with food, exercise, and lifestyle until you find exactly what works for you.

Today, I am sharing some of the best detox foods for PCOS. Let’s feel amazing and have endless energy every single day!


Green Shakes or Smoothies

Eat your greens! Have a green smoothie or shake once a day and feel amazing! These lovelies will boost your energy and balance your hormones beautifully. Add chard, kale, or spinach, green apple, lemon, ginger, coconut water, and celery for a powerhouse green smoothie! It makes my mouth water!

 


Fruits and Vegetables

 

Starchy or non-starchy vegetables? Non-starchy vegetables include dark leafy greens, broccoli, spinach, carrots, celery, asparagus, zucchini, and eggplant.

Have some starchy vegetables include parsnips, sweet potatoes, purple potatoes, red potatoes, butternut squash, pumpkin, and artichokes.

Fruits lower in sugar are also perfect for the detox food list and some I love are kiwi, blueberries, blackberries, apricots, plums, grapefruit, and cranberries.


Healthy Fats

Your body needs healthy fats. They don’t make you fat! They promote weight loss and balance hormones. Some include avocados, nuts, ghee, flax seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, coconut, and coconut butter.

The best healthy oils for the PCOS diet and detox include coconut oil, avocado oil, and extra virgin olive oil.


Superfoods

Many of the detox superfoods that are great for healing PCOS include adaptogens (ashwagandha and reishi), apple cider vinegar, turmeric, and cinnamon. Superfood teas that contain nettle leaf, raspberry leaf, and licorice root.

Lean Protein

You need to get quality protein through grass-fed and grass-finished meats, chicken, salmon, tuna, sardines, shrimp, and eggs. Lean protein will stabilize blood sugar.

Foods to Avoid for PCOS Healing

There are several foods to put on the elimination diet list and avoid if you are healing from, or just newly diagnosed with PCOS.

Some include any processed foods, dairy, gluten, sugar, red meat, and alcohol. They can all cause inflammation, insulin resistance, increased estrogen levels, weight gain, and brain fog.

However, there is great news about this. There is a healthy food alternative for every single one of these foods! How cool is that? More on all of these foods to avoid in an upcoming blog post.
