Thyroid Nutrition and Reset
Do you suffer from a thyroid deficiency? Were you newly diagnosed with Hypothyroidism? Sometimes it is hard to know where to start.
When I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism and soon after PCOS, it was overwhelming. I didn’t know what to do after I received a letter from a doctor saying my thyroid levels were low and I would have to take a pill for the rest of my life. What!?
I researched everything I could about thyroid disease and deficiencies. Nutrition and fitness were the two top things to focus on once the thyroid levels were under control.
Nutrition plays a huge part in keeping a healthy and well functioning thyroid. Energizing, nourishing foods that help your thyroid function properly. Let’s take a look at some of the very best thyroid foods to nourish your body so you can feel badass every day!

The Secret to Optimal Thyroid Health
Start Here. H20 Baby! Drink up Buttercup
First of all, you need to be drinking clean water every single day. Period. Consuming half your body weight in ounces daily will keep you hydrated(most of the time). We are all naturally dehydrated so we need to replenish everything we lost from the day before.
The problem is we can go lower and lower on our hydration levels if we do not keep up with it, and this makes it harder to get back to 100%. Be diligent and track your consumption of water daily. Add lemons, limes, and berries for taste. Himalayan Pink Salt is also great for adding in electrolytes. Make it fun!
Using a full water purifier or water filtration system for your home that removes fluoride, viruses, pathogenic bacteria, and other toxins are the absolute best thing you can do for your family. Using a Big Berkey water purifier system or reverse osmosis water filtration systems(and adding minerals and electrolytes back in) is the way to go! Just think about what you really want in your water and if you want to live a more holistic life without plastic bottles.
Artichokes
Artichokes have been one of my favorite things to consume for years. This is amazing news since the nutrients in the artichoke hearts and leaves can restore the thyroid gland, detox the liver, and boost our immune systems. They are anti-inflammatory, rich in antioxidants, and contain vitamin C and potassium. Some research even indicates they can reduce or shrink thyroid nodules, cysts, or tumors.
Steaming artichokes is the best way to consume them and I love a great dairy-free garlic butter to go with! Can you say heaven! The leaves or “inside meat” of an artichoke is so delicious you will be hooked. It is very tasty. If you want more information on preparing artichokes you can find that in the Thyroid Healing book with Medical Medium mentioned below.
Berries
Berries are amazing for your thyroid, high in antioxidants, low in fat, and have anti-inflammatory benefits that help cardiovascular health, brain health, and chronic conditions including cancer.
Blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries are the main berries to focus on. Blueberries have always been a favorite of mine and full of vitamin C, phytonutrients, and boost your energy. Blackberries can help reduce thyroid nodules and strengthen tissue, and raspberries are a great overall detox for your body.
If you can find wild blueberries they are absolutely beneficial as well. They are the powerhouse of antioxidants and remove toxic heavy metals from the liver, brain and reduce nodules in the thyroid.
Bone Broth
Homemade Bone Broth is the best (regular or vegan) and the nutrients are so healing for your thyroid. It is made by simmering animal bones for up to 24 hours to extract the amazing nutritional benefits from the bones. Always use grass-fed and pasture-raised animal bones for maximum effects.
The amazing collagen benefits alone are amazing for your hair, skin, teeth, bones, and it heals leaky gut. The amino acids in bone broth give you energy, boost your metabolism and immune system, detox your liver, and improves joint flexibility.
Eat bone broth every day or a few times a week. Make up a huge weekly batch to save time. Other alternatives I love are Lono Life and Kettle and Fire.
Celery
Celery (and Celery Juice) is one of the most powerful healing foods you can consume for your thyroid. Plain Celery Juice is the best in the morning and it can change everything for your gut. Celery is also a great detox for your liver flushing out toxic acids and repairs the intestinal lining of your gut. Digestion will improve as well. You will never want to go back!
Drink a 12-16 oz. glass daily fresh from a juicer. Organic Celery is ideal, but any kind will be beneficial and make sure you rinse and wash the celery very well before juicing. Celery sticks are also a great snack and perfect with hummus.
This is the Omega Juicer I use here. It works perfectly and super powerful!
Leafy Greens (and all the other Greens)
Eating Plants and Greens from our Mother Earth. That is what it is all about!
Arugula, Romaine, Lettuce, Swiss Chard, Spinach, Bokchoy, Cabbage(*read below), Collard Greens, Mustard Greens, Dandelion Greens, and Kale are all included in this list! Consuming Greens at every meal saved my life and I love them so much. I want to grow more wild greens and sprouts, and I am currently learning how to plant an organic garden.
*Note: When you start any type of elimination diet or gut healing protocol for your thyroid removing high fiber foods such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower is imperative since they are hard to digest and can exacerbate your symptoms until you get your gut and digestion healed.
Leafy Greens are so beneficial and nourishing for thyroid function and balancing hormones it needs to be a must-have in your life. Greens detox the liver, combat heart disease, increase energy, increase cognitive function, support adrenal glands which in turn support the thyroid, and give you radiant skin. You will crave more of them once you start!
Fermented Foods
Fermented foods are the best thing you can put in your body besides plants and greens. They are the probiotics you can eat! Fermented foods are full of thyroid vitamins and are the gut probiotics you need to produce thyroid hormones.
They are typically low in sugar and calories which helps promote weight loss, a great detox for your intestines and gut, rich in vitamin B, A, E, and C, stabilize blood sugar, and they all contain the “good bacteria” that will heal your gut quickly.
Coconut Kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi(Korean spicy for me), fermented vegetables, and kombucha are some of the fermented foods to try. I am going to make a few homemade recipes and will share them right here when I do.
Healthy Fats
You need Fat. You might think you don’t, or have read that consuming fats will make you fat. Wrong! The “good fats” are monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated acids, and omega-3 fatty acids. The healthy fats you need daily or weekly include avocados(my bestie for life), vegan butter, ghee, whole eggs, olives, olive oil, coconut oil, nut butter, wild salmon, sardines, walnuts, hemp seeds, and pumpkin seeds. Yum!
Consuming Healthy Fats help your focus, eliminates brain fog and gives you all the amino acids needed for your body and thyroid. They are also packed with omega-3’s, tons of vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients.
My personal favs are coconut oil, vegan butter, avocados, and olives.
Microgreens & Sprouts
I love to put microgreens and sprouts on my salads, soups, wraps, tacos, and basically everything I eat. Microgreens and sprouts are very high in selenium and zinc, help boost your immune system, reduce thyroid nodules, and improve thyroid health overall.
Mung bean sprouts, rainbow microgreens, arugula microgreens, live alfalfa sprouts, and broccoli sprouts are a few that you will fall in love with! They are all very high in nutrients, loaded with phytonutrients and antioxidants, improve heart health, reduce chronic illness, and are full of vitamins A, C, E, and K. Load um up!
Nuts and Sprouted Seeds
A combination of different nuts and seeds have excellent thyroid vitamin and mineral-rich benefits for boosting your thyroid energy. Brazil Nuts top the list with high selenium amounts so you only need to eat a couple of nuts daily. Hazelnuts, Macadamia Nuts, and Walnuts are the other best nuts to consume if you have a thyroid deficiency. Almonds and Cashews are great too if you do not have an allergy. As you already know, there are many allergies associated with nuts, so get allergy tested for these foods if you think there might be an underlying issue.
Sprouted seeds are loaded with zinc and magnesium minerals and pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, flax, and hemp seeds are all the top picks. Practicing seed cycling is incredible for optimal hormone balance, thyroid health, and women diagnosed with PCOS.
Flaxseed, pumpkin seeds, sunflower, and sesame seeds are perfect for boosting estrogen and progesterone during monthly cycles and gaining vital nutrients for optimal hormone balance. More awesome information on this topic coming in an upcoming blog post so stay tuned!
For thyroid healing at the beginning coupled with an elimination diet protocol, some nuts and seeds should be avoided initially so check with your functional doctor or licensed nutritionist before you begin any new program. See my health disclaimer below.
Healthy Protein
Protein is super important for your thyroid health and function. The best anti-inflammatory proteins include wild-caught sockeye salmon, cod, tuna, lobster, shellfish, halibut, crab, turkey, organic chicken, and grass-fed, pasture-raised, grass-finished beef, bison and lamb.
Benefits from healthy protein include those lovely omega 3’s, iodine, vitamin D, selenium, and zinc which are all super important for your thyroid. The amino acids and fatty acids are essential for proper hormone balance and production.
Root Vegetables
Bring on ALL the root vegetables! You feel better eating more vegetables and you start craving them once you do. Can you say satisfying cravings and helping nutrient deficiencies? Yay!
The best root vegetables include beets, parsnips, turnips, rutabaga, russet potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, celery root, and squash. Roasted Root Veggies are my Jam and so delicious!!
They are all wonderful for your thyroid and help nourish the skin, control appetite, help reduce thyroid nodules & cysts, and detox the liver. They are also high in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and an excellent source of protein for your body.
Sea Vegetables & Seaweed
Atlantic Sea Vegetables and Seaweed are the powerhouses for ridding the body of heavy toxic metals and poisons. All of these amazing alkaline-infused sea vegetables contain iodine and zinc which are both needed for the thyroid to function. They also lower blood sugar, reduce the risk of inflammation of the thyroid, remove radiation from the thyroid, and prevents colon and thyroid cancer. Pretty amazing stuff!
Some of my favorites include nori wraps, roasted seaweed snacks, and seaweed salads. Other sea vegetables include kombu, wakame, hijiki, agar-agar, and arame. Give them a try!
Other Favorites – Herbs & Fruit
Use these herbs and greens for your health! Cilantro, Garlic, Turmeric, Maca Root, Ginger, Thyme, Basil, Rosemary, Figs, Spirulina, Barley Grass juice powder, Wheatgrass powder, Lemon Balm, and Licorice Root. See more below for my herb and supplement recommendations.
I also can’t live without asparagus, broccoli, brussel sprouts, grapefruit, watermelon, lemons, limes, pineapples, oranges, melon, nectarines, mangoes, strawberries, bananas, and kiwi.
Get Tested First
If you know you have a food sensitivity or food allergy please avoid those foods immediately and find a licensed and expert allergist. They can go over your history and test you with different foods so you can know exactly what foods to consume as an alternative.
